On These Shoulders We Stand

Not everything began with Stonewall. On These Shoulders We Stand, winner of the Outfest 2009 Special Programming Award for Freedom, is an illuminating historical account of early gay life and activism in Los Angeles. Contrary to the popular belief that the gay rights movement began exclusively in New York City and San Francisco, Los Angeles has a significant and riveting LGBT past.
On These Shoulders We Stand is a moving documentary that profiles a city and its activists by interweaving first person accounts from eleven leaders like Rev. Troy Perry with seldom-seen archival footage and photographs of the times. By tracing a timeline from the 1950’s through the early 1980’s, the film proves without a doubt that Los Angeles’ gay community has had a national impact on issues like the civil rights movement, the meaning of the first amendment, and not surprisingly, the evolution of the entertainment industry.
On These Shoulders We Stand, director Glenne McElhinney’s moving tribute to those who lived and shaped our history, brings the often marginalized story of Los Angeles’ LGBT community to the forefront for a new generation of audiences.
